History

Our Beginning

Gammon Theological Seminary had its beginning as Gammon School of Theology, first as a department of religion and philosophy at Clark University for the 1869-1870 academic year.

In February 1872, Clark Theological Seminary was opened with 26 students. Gammon Theological Seminary was founded in 1883 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Gammon is The United Methodist component of a consortium of six historically African American theological schools, The Interdenominational Theological Center.

Gammon at ITC is a co-educational, professional graduate school of theology. Its faculty personifies vigorous scholarship, rigorous academic discipline, and significant research in the service of the church and other communities in the world. It is the world’s premier resource for black church scholarship and faith-based solutions to the spiritual and socio-economic challenges confronting the African-American community.

Our Accreditation

Gammon/ITC is fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school is a member of the Atlanta Theological Association, among other organizations, and maintains cross-registration arrangements with Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, Columbia Theological Seminary, and Morehouse School of Medicine.

Founder of Gammon

Elijah Gammon

Elijah H. Gammon (1891 – 1891) became a wealthy man after the Civil War by manufacturing and selling farm harvesting equipment. With his generous financial gifts, he became a major benefactor and contributed greatly to the founding and development of Gammon Theological Seminary.
